Sometimes speed is more important than expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Savvy managers routinely gain enough understanding of new projects to target the work to the workers\u2019 strengths.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Even in creative fields, managers determine which worker is best for a job based on their speed and skill. Take a profession as inherently immeasurable as art. Art benefactors are middle managers who know the go-to person for time-sensitive work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In his bestselling biography, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Leonardo-Vinci-Walter-Isaacson\/dp\/1501139169\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=IN2BZQPS4B5W&amp;keywords=leonardo+da+vinci+walter+isaacson&amp;qid=1703269878&amp;sprefix=leonardo+da+vin%2Caps%2C310&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leonardo da Vinci<\/a>, Walter Isaacson immerses himself in 15th-century Italy. Studying da Vinci\u2019s sketchbooks and works of art, Isaacson paints a picture of a brilliant and distractable artist.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Occasionally, da Vinci was passed over for big jobs by his benefactor, Lorenzo de\u2019 Medici. For example, the Sistine Chapel ceiling commission went to Michelangelo, one of da Vinci\u2019s contemporaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It\u2019s easy to imagine Lorenzo de\u2019 Medici\u2019s assessment of Leonardo da Vinci:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>Leo has great attention to detail. His drawings of the human anatomy are astonishingly realistic. That is, if Leo completes his work. I\u2019ve seldom experienced a more distractable employee.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>Leo will start drawing an arm, get excited about how water flows in the river, and abandon his original drawing.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>While his innate talent is indisputable, his discipline is lacking. He has a pattern of leaving half-finished works lying around as if he expects others to complete them.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>Leo is also a perfectionist which, I think, is a big part of his<br>problem. When the going gets tough and Leo can\u2019t get it absolutely correct, he\u2019ll put his painting on the shelf.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>He\u2019s been working on this painting he calls \u201cMona Lisa\u201d for almost a decade. I keep telling him to finish it already. He\u2019s letting great get in the way of good.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>His pal Michelangelo, on the other hand, is an absolute workhorse. He chiseled out \u201cDavid\u201d in the time Leo was dithering with his sketchbook. When I need work done tout de suite, I look to Michelangelo.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>Leo was miffed when I gave Michelangelo the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Although it took Michelangelo four years to complete the ceiling, I knew Leo would never have finished it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If de\u2019 Medici had upcoming work requiring precise, scientific anatomical drawings, he\u2019d most certainly want to use da Vinci provided the deadline wasn\u2019t too tight. Otherwise, he\u2019d go with Michelangelo, who was no slouch in the realistic representation of the human form.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If a church sought a graceful religious painting, de\u2019 Medici might go with the talented but less renowned Sandro Botticelli. de\u2019 Medici understands each artist well enough to play to their strengths so they can deliver spectacular results.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Does this intrigue you?
